The Conquering Tide – Ian Toll

This is the 2nd book in Ian W. Toll’s historical The Pacific War Trilogy, covering the middle years of World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Reading book series out of order is not generally advisable, but this second book in the series stands complete in itself, even without the prior supporting history of the first volume. It is a perfect blend of historical facts and dramatic action, with incredible detail and insight into the people, personalities, and decision-making processes from the lower ranks on the front lines, to the highest levels of power in the military and government. Ian’s nuanced descriptions of the unfolding of the history of WWII in the Pacific are as entertaining as they are educational.
