Fractions Educational Learning Board STEM Montessori Activity

Fractions is an excellent source for visualizing and learning fractions.  The 7.5” x 10” base is made from scratch and water-resistant floorboard, and 8 rows of tiles are made of Maple and Alder or other similarly contrasting woods.

The 8 rows of tiles are cut into 8 different lengths, corresponding to a full length, ½, length, 1/3, length, ¼ length, 1/5 length, 1/6 length, 1/8 length, and 1/10 length.

When Fractions is assembled as in the picture above, with all similar length tiles in the same row, the overall concept and feel of fractions is immediately obvious.  Mixing and matching tiles of different lengths to see what combinations work and what combinations don’t work teaches the concept of least common denominator more effectively than any visual-only method.

Can the board be set up so that each row has at least one different block?

How many ways can different length tiles be combined to fill a row?

Is there any way to use just a combination of the 1/3 and 1/5 blocks to fill a row?
