Ashley Bell – Dean Koontz
Bebe Blair is a 22-year-old California surfer and writer who has an incredibly detailed, nuanced, and vivid imagination. Her imagination routinely turns every day experiences into dramatic, epic stories in her mind, which she often pens. She also strives to be a realistic, “can do”, “valiant girl”, not willing to accept fate passively, or be beguiled by superficial values. But there is an ineffable quality about Bebe that doesn’t feel quite right. Though Bebe and her parents have a great relationship, there is an ever-present (but well managed) tension between them; she is different than her parents who, while embracing some solid core values, definitely have a significant leaning toward the superficial and “what will be will be” passivity. At first it seems that this tension might explain the disquieting aspect of Bebe’s personality, but it doesn’t. There is something more, something that feels like her courageous acceptance of life is a façade, and behind it lurks some denial of ultimate reality.
Bebe has something go disturbingly wrong. The left side of her body is refusing to cooperate with her mind’s intentions, and to unleash the power of her mind to deal with her current physical challenge, she will have to revisit her past, uncover events that she has hidden from herself, and deal with them first.
